A Day of Relaxation

Last week has been extremely stressful for me. I am generally a tough person and can brush stress off when needed but I was hit with blows back to back and I was ready to lock myself in a room all weekend. The week resulted in arguments with several of my loved ones and the end of relationships in my life. When things hit the fan for me I know that sitting inside isn't the best choice. I gave myself time to reflect but decided to go outside for some fresh air and to clear my mind. The cold weather decided to take a break so I thought a day trip to DC would be exactly what I needed to lift my spirits.

Whenever I'm down I go to one of the people I can always depend on; my best friend. In the morning I walked over to her house to join her and her mom for breakfast. Cloe is one of the best cooks I know so I knew it would be delicious. We had the usual breakfast staples like eggs, bacon, and sausage but she spiced it up by making tiny savory pancakes with quail eggs and caviar.

This was super fancy to a spam eater like me but it was so damn good. They were bite-sized so we all just popped them in our mouths. If you're feeling extra fancy one morning, this is the recipe for you.

The DC metro system is delayed EVERY weekend so we caught a Lyft down to Chinatown. This is our usual stomping grounds as it is bustling with things to do and easy to walk down to the National Mall. Cloe is always down to pop into a museum so we stopped into the National Portrait Gallery to see the new exhibitions. It was a lot busier than I'm used to but a warm day plus a weekend is a recipe for all public spaces to be crowded. We walked through its three floors admiring the permanent collections and taking in the new ones. There's an exhibit showing all of the president's official portraits where we pleaded to Obama's image to save us. I also ran up to Rosie the Riveter to ask her for guidance because we're not taking any crap from old white men anymore.

This day was exactly what I needed to forget my problems for awhile and enjoy myself. It's been a long time since I've had a day where I did exactly what I wanted without time constraints or worrying about the future. One of my goals for this year is to focus on my mental health and well being more and having more days like this will be essential.

What do you do to destress?
